Deflate Tires for Deep Kalahari Sand

When undertaking a 4x4 self-drive expedition through reserves like Moremi, Chobe, or the Central Kalahari, tire pressure is the decisive factor between effortless cruising and hours spent digging out under the scorching sun. Standard highway tire pressures (2.2 bar / 32 psi or higher) will cause your vehicle to dig straight into the fine, powdery sand tracks and bog down the transmission.
Before entering sandy tracks, deflate all four tires down to 1.2 to 1.4 bar (17 to 20 psi). This elongates the tire footprint, allowing the vehicle to float across the surface rather than cutting ruts. Carry a reliable 12-volt heavy-duty air compressor to reinflate tires promptly when returning to hard gravel or tarmac, and ensure your rental contract includes two full-size spare wheels, a sand spade, and heavy-duty recovery tracks.
