Navigate Unfenced Wilderness Camps Safely

Almost all remote safari lodges, mobile fly-camps, and public campsites within protected areas operate entirely without perimeter fences. Wildlife—including elephants, hippos, hyenas, and lions—treat camp clearings as natural migration corridors and move through freely at any hour of the day or night.
Never walk between tents or to the dining boma alone after dusk; always wait for a licensed guide or night escort with a high-powered beam. Keep your tent zipped securely at all times to prevent curious baboons and snakes from entering. In the rare event of encountering a large predator on foot, never turn your back and run, as running instinctively triggers an attack response. Instead, stand tall, make yourself appear large, speak in a firm voice, and back away slowly without breaking eye contact.
